Cereal Rye is a common cover crop choice for farmers because it can be seeded later in the fall than any other cereal grain. It grows best in the spring and fall during cooler, wetter weather. Rye is the hardiest of all the cerals with a sizable root system for holding soil and relatively inexpansive and easy to establish. Cereal rye resumes growth quickly in the spring and is easy to kill prior to planting.

Plant 1" to 1-1/2" deep. No-till seeding works best with Cereal Rye.

Cereal Rye does an excellent job of absorbing unused nitrogen with quick growing, fibrous roots. Although it lacks a taproot, studies have shown that Cereal Rye can capture 70-100% of the residual N after a corn crop. Cereal Rye is also a useful tool to suppress weeds and provide dry matter residue for no-till management systems.

Mix Cereal Rye with other cover crop seeds and plant at a rate of 40 lb/acre or plant Cereal Rye alon at 90 lb/acre in August-Mid October or in March-April for forage. Increase the planting rate 1.5 times if planting as forage or pasture
