Cover Crop Radish | 50 lb. Bags
Weight: 50.000000

Scav-N-ger brand cover crop radish produces a significant root mass. This extra large root system allows Scav-N-ger to pull nitrogen and other nutrients from deep within the soil and bring them back to the surface. Upon decomposition, these roots leave large channels in the soil that improve water infiltration and soil aeration. Tests have shown that cover crop radish can scavenge over 150 lbs of nitrogen per acre. The scavenged nitrogen becomes available to the next cash crop or increases soil organic matter.

Radishes seem to be the superstars of the cover crop world, with a lot of advertising poured into their promotion. Radishes are a fantastic tool for the cover cropper, and several of their benefits are listed below:

RADISH BENEFITS:

• Potentially deep penetrating large tuber

This depends on whether you plant them early enough and how much nitrogen you have left in the field. If you've been using manure, you'll see some fairly big tubers in the field.

• Reduce soil compaction

Radishes are great for busting up compacted soils. They'll go where corn and soybean roots generally can't go - and then the following year's crop will follow those root channels.

• Earthworm “Heaven”

It seems like wherever the radishes are, there you'll find the earthworms. If you're working to rebuild some overworked fields, radish should be part of your program.

• Voracious scavenger of nutrients

The studies done on this are conclusive. These plants love to go grab left over nutrients in the field.

• Good for Grazing

Although they don't have the tops like turnips do, they're still green enough that you can run the cattle out.

Plant Scav-N-ger Radishes to scavenge left over nutrients, reduce soil compaction, promote water infiltration, increase earthworm activity, improve soil biology, suppress weeds, and potentially reduce the use of chemicals and tillage. The radishes penetrate deep through the hard pan to reduce soil compaction, allowing roots of the folowing cash crop to access more nutrients from deeper in the soil profile. Provides an excellent cover, effectively helping with weed control in fields.

PLANTING TIPS
Planting Rate: 8-10 lb/acre or 3-5 lb/acre when mixed with legumes or grasses
Planting Depth: 1/4" - 3/4"
Aerial Seeding: Aerial seed into soybeans before leaf drop (~1/2 leaves yellow) and into corn when the corn is dried up to the ear (for ~50% of sunlight to reach ground between the rows). Apply 60 units of N or manure for best root growth potential
Planting Time: Seed from early August to September (earlier in the north and later in the south)
