Partner Pea/Oat Mix
This mixture fits well before or after a summer annual crop - such as pearl millet or sorghum sudangrass. It takes about 60 days from emergence to maturity. Adding peas to oats increases crude protein by 3-5 points and decreases NDF by 5-8 points. The mix is widely adaptable to multiple soil types and commonly used for baling, silage, or as a nurse crop.
Partner Pea/Oat mix performs well with 30 to 50 lb/acre of actual N. Produces a high quality haylage and makes a great nurse crop for a forage seeding. Tolerates frost/light freeze. Ideal soil pH should be around 6.0-7.0.
Mix:
50% Haywire Forage Oats
50% Stockade Forage Peas
Plant in March--April or August at 100-120 lb/acre. Plant at 70 lbs/acre if used as a nurse crop. Sow 1" deep. Allow 60 days from emergence to harvest. Produces best crop if harvested when oats are in boot stage.
Approximately 8,500 seeds/lb. 7-10 days to germination. 2'-5' tall at maturity.
